Transforming a dated bathroom into a soothing haven - Island Home Style!

From this....  To this ...

Hi Everyone!

I thought I would kick off our latest blog post with an update on our latest renovation project - Georgia's Bathroom !

Those of you that have been following Island Home for a while, will know that we have been working through renovating a 18th century Georgian home for the past 6 years. Most of what we have done,  I have been chronicling here. Its been a labour of love for us, but at times quite overwhelming! Every project we take on tends to spiral into a larger job - the things our erstwhile builder Ian uncovers tend to be not only not what was expected, but usually more costly than originally thought!

It was the same with our most recent update which was Georgia's bathroom. Known affectionately as "the tomb" it was absolutely freezing in winter no matter how many radiators we put on full throttle! This part of the house had a flat roof and absolutely no insulation. This combo on a snowy January morning meant Gee tended to wear Ugg boots and her woolliest dressing gown whenever she was in there.

It was also a huge bathroom, last renovated most likely in the mid 1980's. We decided to turn it into a good size bathroom and dressing room for her, taking the whole room right back to the bare stone, insulating all walls and the roof cavity while maintaining as much of the cathedral roof space that we could. We split it in two with the larger proportion remaining with what would be her new bathroom, but adding a 3 door wardrobe unit and sit down makeup space. We decided to keep the dressing area simple, yet for it to mirror the new bathroom with Georgian wall panelling, and shaker wardrobe doors.

We decided to replace the original window with a handmade oak, floor to ceiling Georgian window which overlooks a gorgeous high hedge. With a view of green it was a no-brainer to decide on a freestanding bath to sit pride of place in front of that view. I added some Island Home touches, with coastal wall art, one of our Coastal Stools to keep things handy next to the bath, our ever popular Kiama Geometric Candle Holders and a indigo and cream linen roman blind.

The final result has been well received by Gee - she loves it ( which at the end of the day is what it is all about), but from our perspective I feel like we have given the appropriate nod to the beautiful houses heritage, while including some of our own coastal, Australian Hamptons inspired style!

For more pictures of what we have achieved so far, just take a look on our website www.islandhome.co.uk. Most of our product pictures are photographed in our home, as it is the perfect space to showcase Island Home style and we love sharing it with you! x
